How much does it cost to install a home EV charger in 2026?

A straight answer from an OZEV approved installer: what you pay, what pushes the price up, and how to bring it down.

Updated 22 October 2026 · SmartWired Electrical, NAPIT approved and OZEV approved installer

Short answer: a good quality smart charger, properly installed, costs £1,195 with us, including up to 10m of cable. The final price depends mainly on how far the charger is from your consumer unit and whether your board needs work.

What our price includes

  • RiponEV Pro 7.4kW smart charger, with app, Wi-Fi and load balancing
  • Up to 10m of cable, plus a dedicated isolator and protection device
  • Fitting by a Level 3 EV qualified electrician
  • Testing, an electrical certificate and Building Regulations notification
  • App set-up and a walkthrough before we leave
  • OZEV grant paperwork, if you qualify

Supply or fuse issuesSome homes need the network operator to check the main fuse or a shared supply. We handle the notification and tell you if anything is needed.

Why some quotes look cheaper

Very low “from” prices often cover only a short cable run, a basic charger and no paperwork. Extras get added on the day. Before you compare quotes, ask each installer three things:

  1. How many metres of cable are included?
  2. Is the price fixed after the survey?
  3. Are testing, certification and Building Regulations notification included?

Also check the installer is on the OZEV approved list if you want a grant, and registered with a scheme such as NAPIT or NICEIC.

How to bring the cost down

  • Claim a grant. Renters, flat owners, landlords, businesses and homes with on-street parking can get up to £500. See who qualifies.
  • Use a cheap overnight tariff. A smart charger lets you schedule charging for off-peak hours, which is where the real long-term saving is.
  • Spread the cost. 0% finance over 6, 9 or 12 months with a £99 deposit, subject to status. How finance works.

No driveway?

If you park on the street, a normal wall charger can’t run a cable across the pavement. We’re a Kerbo Charge partner installer, so we can fit a cross-pavement channel with council approval. A government grant of up to £500 is available for this until March 2027.

Common questions

How much is a home EV charger fully installed?

Our RiponEV Pro 7.4kW smart charger is £1,195 fully installed with up to 10m of cable, testing, certification and app set-up. Longer cable runs are £100 per extra 5m up to 20m.

Can I get a grant towards the cost?

Yes, if you rent, own a flat, are a landlord, have only on-street parking with a cross-pavement solution, or are a business. The OZEV grants pay up to £500 per socket until 31 March 2027. Homeowners in a house with their own drive don’t qualify.

Can I spread the cost?

Spread the cost over 6, 9 or 12 months at 0%. Pay the monthly minimum or clear it early with no penalty.

Will I need a new consumer unit?

Not usually. If your board is old, full or has no spare way for the charger circuit, an upgrade may be needed. We check this on the survey and include it in your written price, so it’s never a surprise on the day.

How long does installation take?

Most home installs take a single visit, and you’re charging the same day.
