Signs your board needs replacing

  • Rewireable fuses (the old pull-out ones with wire inside)
  • A plastic consumer unit rather than a metal one
  • No RCD, the switch that cuts power in a fraction of a second if someone touches a live fault
  • Trips that keep happening, or a board that feels warm or smells
  • An EICR or insurer has flagged it
  • You’re adding an EV charger, heat pump, new kitchen or extension

Not sure? Send us a photo of your board on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you honestly whether it needs doing.

One of our recent board changes

This home still had its original fuse box with rewireable fuses and no RCD protection at all. We replaced it in a day with a new metal consumer unit, an RCBO on every circuit so one fault only trips that circuit, and surge protection.

Every circuit was tested, labelled and certified before the power went back on.

Consumer unit questions

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?

Most board changes in a house are done in a day. Your power is off for most of that time while we swap the board and test every circuit, and it’s back on before we leave.

How much does a new consumer unit cost?

It depends on the number of circuits, the protection your home needs and what testing finds, so we give you a fixed written price after a free survey. 0% finance is available over 6, 9 or 12 months, subject to status.

What if testing finds faults on my existing wiring?

Older circuits sometimes show faults once modern protection is fitted. If that happens we show you what we found and price the fix before doing anything. You never get an unagreed extra on the invoice.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. A board change is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NAPIT approved contractor we register it with building control and give you an Electrical Installation Certificate. Keep it for insurance and when you sell.

I’m a landlord. Can you work around tenants?

Yes. We book a time with your tenants, keep the outage to the working day and send you the certificate once it’s done. We can do the EICR at the same visit.
